Roary the Repair Lion says:

If your battery keeps dying, then this is probably the part you require! This is a common problem as it is a part that wears out over time or can blow if there is a surge in the charging system, the battery or if a battery has been hooked up backwards.

If not replaced quickly it can damage your battery and cause your starter motor solenoid to burn out! Prevent an expensive repair and replace it as soon as possible. Otherwise future surges will damage your Starter Motor and Battery!

Testing:

Testing the Battery Charging Rectifier (BCR) can only effectively be performed with the engine running, so for this you will need to use the recoil starter if your engine has manual start.

  1. With a multi-meter, you need to check the input to the BCR from the Charging Coil behind the flywheel. Input should be between 16-22 VAC. Anything outside of these values indicates a problem with the charging coils. Replace the Charging Coil and the BCR as it will also have failed if the voltage was higher than 22 VAC. Replacing the BCR alone at this point would lead to another failure.
  2. If the voltage input is correct, we then need to test the BCR's output to the battery, this is done from the output wire to the engine body (ground) and should give you a voltage reading of 12.5-13.5 VDC. Any other reading indicates the BCR has failed and needs replacing.
  3. To test the battery, check across the poles. Again you should get 12.5-13.5 VDC. If you get a lower or higher voltage, replace as soon as possible or it will damage your BCR, if it has not already.

The OEM battery for you engine has been discontinued, but we sell alternative batteries that will suit your engine.
