Not only do they keep the oil in your engine, they tell us how much oil we have and that is very important. Low oil can cause damage to engine parts and might result in your engine seizing altogether!
A small amount of oil can disappear in everyday running and will need topping up. If the oil goes low very quickly or the engine is putting out black smoke, this is an early sign that your Piston Rings need replacing. (See our piston rings page for advice on testing.)
So, show your dipstick the attention it deserves before you start your engine.
