These often get bent when someone is trying to "lock off" the engine.
Here is a tip for the future... find a good length of clean rope. Remove the spark plug and feed the one end of the clean rope into the spark plug hole. Make sure you have a hold of the other end as you do not want to lose the rope in the engine! Now turn your engine over with the recoil until the rope prevents the engine cycle completing. Now you can undo attachments, replace the flywheel and more without damaging anything.
