Replacement Solenoid Relay for the Starter Motor

ghg-logo-large-sq-2023-roary-tm-med.jpg

Roary the Repair Lion says:

If you are replacing your solenoid it is because it has burnt out. For this to happen there would have been an electrical surge in the 12 volt ignition system.

Things to check before purchasing:

Unfortunately, when the solenoid burns out it could have damaged a few other parts as well, such as the "Starter Motor to Solenoid Wire," the "Battery Charging Rectifier," and possibly the battery!

Testing:

  1. Visually check the Stater Motor to Solenoid wire for damage or signs of burning. Replace if necessary.
  2. With a multi-meter and the engine running, test the input to the Battery. You should get 13v DC. If you are getting a higher output reading (or no reading at all) then the "Battery Charging Rectifier" needs replacing too!
  3. With engine off, test across the Battery connections. If your battery is giving out more than 13v DC, it to will also need replacing. If it is giving out lower than 11.5v DC, charge the battery and retest. If continues to be lower than 11.5v DC, replace the battery. (The original battery has been discontinued, but we have suitable replacements on our Batteries page.)

WARNING:

If you do not replace a faulty "Battery Charging Rectifier," it will continue to feed a high voltage in to the 12v ignition system. This will result in damage to your replacement "Starter Motor Solenoid" and your "Battery" too!
