Replacement Cylinder Head Gasket.

Roary the Repair Lion says:

*1) It is advisable to replace the cylinder head gasket each time you open the cylinder, as these are crush seal gaskets that can easily bend when removed. Even the smallest bend can:

  • allow air into the cylinder changing the air/fuel mixture.
  • can cause a significant loss of horsepower.
  • allow oil to be pulled into the head making the engine burn rich.

Not replacing this part during repairs often results in hours of extra work trying to find out why it is not running smoothly after the repair.

*2) Before replacing, also check if the piston rings are in good order. An easy test is to put a tablespoon of fresh oil on the piston and leave overnight. If the oil has disappeared in the morning, then the piston rings need replacing too.

*3) Once rebuilt you will need to adjust your valve lash clearances to:

    Intake: 0.015" (0.381mm)
Exhaust: 0.015-0.020" (0.4-0.5mm) (Try the smallest setting first. If still not running right, change clearance to 0.020".)

You will need a Feeler Gauge to set your Valve Lash Clearances.
